For the past two weeks P6 have been studying Jacobites as a mini topic. In class we studied the Stuart family tree, the Massacre of Glencoe and several of the Jacobites battles in detail; Battle of Killiecrankie, Battle of Prestonpans and the Battle of Culloden. We also compared and contrasted Jacobite and Red Coat soldiers and had an amazing time at Edinburgh castle today at the ‘Rebels and Redcoats’ workshop.
First, we looked at life as a Red Coat soldier. The children learned about the defences at Edinburgh castle, they then got to dress up as grenediers and officers and look at the red coat weapons.
After watching the 1 o clock gun, we then got to see the prisons where Jacobite soldiers were kept. Then it was back to the education centre to dress up as highlander soldiers, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Flora MacDonald and Bonnie Prince Charlie in disguise as Betty Burke
It has been a busy two weeks learning about the Jacobites. A big thank you to Mr Howie who took all of P6 for a ‘Beat the Redcoats’ battle strategies lesson to help the kids plan the terrain and position their soldiers in preparation for a battle against red coat soldiers. Here are some pics from our topic these past two weeks.
