Marvellous Maths in P6B

This week in Numeracy we have been using the split method and the compensation strategy to solve multiplication problems involving 2 and 3 (or 4) digit numbers.

The Split Method

39 x 6 = ?

30 x 6 = 180

9 x 6 = 54

= 234

The Compensation Strategy

42 x 7 = ?

40 x 7 = 280

+ 14 = 294

We have also been using our knowledge and quick recall of the 1-12 times tables while playing ‘Spiral’ and ‘Spoons’.
